During WW II the true nature of military operations was usually disguised by the use of codenames.
Names were taken in sequence from a random list – unless the next name available would, by coincidence, be too close to the nature of the operation.
Early in the war Churchill decreed that codenames must not be frivolous so that no mother or wife would have to be told their loved one was lost in such an operation.
As time passes the significance of lesser operations is becoming forgotten.
